My Internet SEO Story

My name is JB. I am an Internet addict. That is half a joke and half the truth! I have been working on my Internet sites since about the fall of 2013, so that is about 6 years as of the writing of this sentence. I applied for an Amazon Affiliate account in the winter of 2014, and started earning small amounts on a site where I reviewed guide books for Italy.

My sites have never earned more than a total of about $220 a month doing affiliate marketing, but I expect that to change.. I have attached an Excel spreadsheet here and a PDF here of the payment history over time, up to the fall of 2019.

I am absolutely convinced I can make a go of this. I will explain, over the course of this and other blog entries, and you can watch me as I progress and turn this into a really profitable effort. I am going to keep this blog up, not exposed to Google, until I get up to $500 per month in earnings from the sites. I am shooting for this to occur by June, 2020. Hopefully it will happen sooner!

My main website in the past has been Best Reviews Guru, bestreviews.guru. My target with this website was to create a site that reviewed a variety of products: dog supplements, cameras, kitchen appliances — lots of niches. I had been watching a site named The Wire Cutter, and essentially was going to copy what they were doing. I was using Spencer Haw’s Long Tail Pro to figure out good keywords to target, and also was really interested in dogs. So I started out with dog supplements, specifically glucosamine. At this time, it was a completely untapped affiliate market, and there were lots of keywords that were ripe for the picking. Though Amazon Affiliate marketing had been going on for quite a while, it was still wide open and there were many, many areas one could target to review and recommend products, and make affiliate commissions.

One thing I have learned in this enterprise is that there are a zillion ways to make money in Internet marketing. I think that what you really have to do is pick one, stay narrow, concentrate, and put all your efforts into a small area. Focus. I was not good at this because I wanted to do so many things, try all of them. Examples are Amazon Affiliate marketing, Google Adsense, and then a bunch I did not want to get involved in, like FBA, fulfillment by Amazon.

My strategy at the moment is to split off the niches from BRG (Best Reviews Guru) one by one and start up new, smaller niche sites. The first one I did was Pet Supplies Station, for dog supplements. My original idea was to have a sort of news reel site, where BRG had many articles on the front page, like the NY Times sort of, and a bunch of niche silos under it. Like Wire Cutter. I stubled upon what I thought was a great theme for this, Unoblog. Actually, it is a great theme for this, but doing this was not the right strategy.

The essence of my strategy at this point is to … more to follow…
